Since first being minted in 1999, the African Wildlife Series has been one of the most popular series of bullion coins, and the 2012 1 oz Silver Somalian African Elephant issue has proved to be a star of the series!
These beautiful Silver coins are produced each year with a new obverse design. This year’s issue features a group of elephants walking across the African savannah. Listed on the obverse is “African Wildlife,” “Elephant” and the weight and purity, .999 fine. The reverse shows the standard Silver Elephant design of the Somalian coat of arms. Also inscribed on the reverse is “Somali Republic,” along with the year of issue and face value, 100 shillings.
Not only do these Silver coins have a fascinating design, but their minting is also interesting. The Silver Elephant coins are commissioned by Somalia but are minted by the Bayerische Hauptmünzamt, or Bavarian Mint, in Munich, Germany. More than 800 years old, the Bavarian Mint began producing coins in 1158 and is the oldest continuing operation in Munich. It is one of five German State Mints but is often thought of as the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance.
