In 2011, the Royal Canadian Mint released the first in what would quickly become an extremely popular three-year series: The Canadian Wildlife Series. They have released two coins in each of the past two years and have announced the first of two releases for 2013 – the Silver Pronghorn Antelope.
The pronghorn antelope can be found in south central Canada and throughout western and central United States. It is often cited as the second-fastest land mammal, behind only the cheetah, with the ability to run more than 50 miles per hour, though some measurements of more than 60 miles per hour have been recorded. However, unlike the cheetah, the pronghorn is able to sustain these speeds over great distances. For this reason, the pronghorn has few natural predators.
To celebrate this beautiful creature, the Silver Pronghorn Antelope coin features a pronghorn walking across a grassy vista, masterfully crafted by designer Emily S. Damstra. The obverse of the coin bears Susanna Blunt’s likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, which has been used on coinage since 2003. Like the other Canadian Wildlife Series coins, this issue has one full ounce of .999 fine Silver, making it among the purest Silver bullion coins available.
