Talk about an exclusive opportunity for APMEX customers! The German Silver manufacturer Geiger Edelmetalle has created a 15-coin minting of the largest Silver coins in the world and APMEX gets the first!
The Silver Ivory Coast Elephant coin weighs in at an astonishing 1,750 oz, or 120 pounds. Roughly the size of a manhole, it measures 650 mm (two feet) in diameter and is made of .999 fine Silver. By comparison, the previous record-holding Silver coin was a now-paltry 22 pounds. Issued by the authority of the Ivory Coast, the coin has a face value of 1,000,000 Francs CFA (Communauté Financière d’Afrique or “Financial Community of Africa”).
The obverse of this larger-than-life coin depicts something equally massive: the African elephant. Images of the majestic creature are hand-carved, rendering each of the 15 coins distinct. The French inscription above reads “Le Monde Animal en Peril,” or “The Animal World in Peril.”
Agricultural and human population gains have reduced the animal’s once expansive habitat, while poachers kill tens of thousands each year for tusks. Collectively, threats have reduced elephant numbers from millions to less than 500,000 across the continent. With only 15 Silver Ivory Coast Elephant coins minted, they will disappear to private collections as quickly as the vulnerable elephant itself.
Marketed as an investor’s “dream conversation piece,” the enormous coin comes with a mounted stand for display. Whether those conversations center around conservation, wildlife, travel, Silver or numismatics, this unique collector’s piece will definitely provide its steward a lifetime of bragging rights, security and eye-catching beauty.
